How do you actually solve number sequence puzzles? I just stare at them.
How do you solve number sequence puzzles?
Run three checks in order: the gaps between terms, the ratios between terms, then every other term, and stop at the first one that makes a clean pattern. Staring is guessing. A routine turns it into checking.
- Gaps. Write each difference under the sequence. Constant? Done. Changing by a pattern? Continue the gaps first.
- Ratios. Is each term 2x, 3x or half the last? Doubling hides well because it grows fast.
- Every other term. Read positions 1, 3, 5 and 2, 4, 6 as two separate sequences.
Gaps, ratios, every other term. In that order.
Okay, but who is this not for? I hate maths.
Who this is not for
If you want competitive puzzle speed-runs or exam-style IQ practice, this page and Cognilo will feel too gentle. Cognilo's ratings describe how you play its puzzles; the listing says they are not a measure of intelligence or health. And if numbers make you tense, Cognilo has five other skills (memory, focus, spatial, language and logic), and Zen mode is unrated.

Today's number sequence puzzle
Same sequence as the phone above, new one every day (it's picked from the date, so everyone on this page sees the same one today).
What was the story with your own sequence-solving?
A mini story: the doubling trap
A reader-shaped example: 3, 6, 12, 24, ... Gaps are 3, 6, 12. They grow, so it's tempting to start "growing gap" maths. But one check later, the ratio is a flat 2. Answer: 48. The routine didn't make you clever, it just made you look at the ratio before you got lost in gaps-of-gaps. Most "I'm bad at these" moments are really "I checked in the wrong order".
Most mistakes are order mistakes, not maths mistakes.
Any catch?
Honest limits
- Our daily puzzle covers five common rule types. Real puzzle books include odder ones (digit sums, primes, letters mixed with numbers).
- In Cognilo, Rule Chain is one of six categories. Each Daily 5 plays five of the six and rotates, so it won't be in every day's set. You can pick it on its own from the Train tab.
- Practice makes you better at these puzzles. We do not claim it changes anything else.
- Pro is optional: it adds Pressure Response and Interference in the Performance Lab, weekly and monthly reports, and up to 12 months of rating history.
One design decision we made in Cognilo: after a round that slipped, there's an unrated Review replay showing exactly what you picked and what the right answer was. Seeing the rule you missed teaches more than a red X.
How does it work in the app?
How Rule Chain works in 3 steps
- Open Cognilo, no account. Start the Daily 5 or pick Rule Chain from Train.
- Find the rule behind the sequence and continue it. Untimed in Precision mode; Sprint adds a timer when you want a push.
- Read the strategy tip and the pace-versus-accuracy note. Tell the app it felt too easy or too hard and the next round responds.

Quick questions before I go.
Number sequence puzzle questions
What is the first thing to check in a number sequence?
The gaps. Write the difference between each pair of neighbours under the sequence. Most everyday puzzles are either a constant gap or a gap that itself changes by a pattern.
What if the differences don't make a pattern?
Try ratios (is each term double or triple the last?), then try splitting the sequence into odd and even positions. Two interleaved sequences are a common trick.
How do I check that my answer is right?
Apply your rule to every term you were given, not only the last two. If the rule needs an exception, it's probably the wrong rule.
What are common number sequence types?
Constant difference (arithmetic), constant ratio (geometric), growing differences (like squares), each term as the sum of the two before (Fibonacci-style), and two alternating sequences.
Does Cognilo have number sequence puzzles?
Yes. Rule Chain asks you to find the rule behind a sequence and continue it. It is one of six skills in the Daily 5, untimed by default, and set to your level each round.
Is Cognilo free?
Yes, the free tier is complete: the Daily 5, all six skills, ratings, the Benchmark and achievements. Cognilo Pro is an optional monthly or annual subscription with extra Lab modes, reports and longer history.
