You open the app
Your first Cognilo puzzle starts straight away. No email, no password, no "tell us your goals" questionnaire. That isn't a trial screen; it is simply how the free tier works.
No form is the fastest way to a first puzzle.

Demo runs 60 times faster than real life. Your real pace will differ.

The Daily 5 picks five short games for your level from six categories: memory, focus, logic, numbers, spatial and language. Each day plays five of the six and rotates, so all six come round across the week. It is untimed by default; Sprint adds a clock and Zen turns ratings off.
03
Nowhere, unless you opt into Game Center. The listing describes Cognilo as local-first: no account, no ads and no tracking, with history kept on your device. With no account to sync through, the JSON export is your backup when you change phones.

Buying or restoring Cognilo Pro, and optional Game Center leaderboards. Competition is off by default, so if you never switch it on, the daily puzzles stay offline.

Lumosity's help center says free users can play 3 games a day "as long as you have an account with us" (Lumosity). The Mind Company lists the free version of its reading, writing and math app as requiring a free account (The Mind Company). Neither is unusual: an account is how many apps tie progress to a person rather than a phone. Cognilo ties it to the phone.
An account ties progress to you. No account keeps it on your phone. Pick the one you value.

Yes. Cognilo, which we make, starts your first puzzle with no sign-up and no questionnaire, and keeps your history on your device. Lumosity and The Mind Company's skills app both ask for an account to use their free versions, according to their own pages checked November 2026.
Not the free version, by Lumosity's own help page: "As a free user you can play 3 games per day as long as you have an account with us" (Lumosity help center).
The ones we checked do. The Mind Company's reading, writing and math training app lists its free version as requiring a free account, with one three-game workout a day and a weekly featured game (The Mind Company, checked November 2026).
On your device. The listing describes Cognilo as local-first, with no account, no ads and no tracking, and lets you export your history as JSON at any time.
Cognilo does. Purchases, restoring purchases and optional Game Center leaderboards need a connection; competition is off by default.
Expect to get better at the games. The National Institute on Aging says there isn't enough evidence that commercial brain-training apps have the effects seen in research training programs (NIA, reviewed 2024). Cognilo's own ratings describe how you play its puzzles, not intelligence or health.
A design decision we made: ratings only move when several sessions agree, so one tired evening doesn't rewrite your profile. That matters more when there's no cloud account averaging things out across devices.
If you play on an iPhone and an iPad and want one shared progress history, Cognilo's on-device history won't do that, and an account-based app is the likelier fit. If you want 40-plus games, Lumosity and The Mind Company's app both list more than Cognilo's eight puzzle types. If you want reading, writing and speaking practice in particular, The Mind Company's app is built around those skills. And if you want no screen at all, a paper puzzle book needs no account either.
