So, do brain games help with aptitude tests?
Not directly: brain games don't raise underlying ability, but practising the real test format does raise scores modestly, so spend most of your time on official practice tests and use games, if at all, as a short warm-up. That is an awkward answer from the people who make SkillArena, a brain game. It is also the one the research supports.

Honest limits first
- SkillArena is a game. Its 1 to 100 ratings describe how you play SkillArena's own games; the listing says plainly they are not an IQ score or a psychological assessment.
- No SkillArena game is spatial. Shape, rotation and pattern-matrix questions get nothing from it.
- Its questions are generated fresh each round and are not written to match any employer's test.
- The National Institute on Aging notes there isn't enough evidence that commercial brain-training apps deliver the benefits seen in research training programs.
Practise the test. Warm up with games, if you like them. Don't confuse the two.
Aptitude test sections vs what SkillArena trains
| Test section (CCAT) | Closest SkillArena games | Honest coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Math | Calculation: making change, estimating totals | Warm-up for mental arithmetic speed |
| Verbal | Comprehension and Communication: careful reading, following instructions, picking the clearest message | Partial: reading care, not vocabulary or analogies |
| Logic | Reasoning: logic queues, patterns | Partial: rule-following, not test-style syllogisms |
| Spatial | None | Not covered: use official practice items |
Your week before an aptitude test, question by question

What is actually on a test like the CCAT?
Criteria's own prep page says 50 questions in 15 minutes, across verbal, math and logic, and spatial reasoning (checked November 2026). Read the employer's email carefully: not every company uses the CCAT, and the test name tells you which official practice material to look for.
Day 1
Should I take a practice test first, or learn tricks first?
Practice test first. It shows you the question types and where your time goes. A meta-analysis of 50 studies found scores rose about 0.26 standard deviations from a first to a second sitting, more on identical forms (0.46) than alternate ones (0.24), and more again with coaching (Hausknecht et al., 2007). Format familiarity is real, cheap and honest.
Days 2 to 5
Where do brain games fit, if at all?
As a short daily warm-up for skills that sit next to the test, not inside it: mental arithmetic, careful reading, following rules quickly. SkillArena's Daily Arena mixes four games in about four minutes; its Calculation games include working out change in your head, and its Comprehension and Communication games ask you to read carefully and pick the clearest message. Treat it as a way to get comfortable thinking fast, then go back to official items.
Days 2 to 5
How do I get faster without getting sloppy?
Do one timed practice set a day and note which questions ate your time. Practise skipping: 18 seconds a question means a 60-second fight with one item costs you three others. For arithmetic, estimate first, then compute only if two answers are close.
Day 6
Is it worth cramming the night before?
Not much. Your score won't hinge on one more evening of drills. Check the test link, your device, your quiet room and the time zone of the deadline, then stop.
Test day
Should I warm up right before?
Optional. If a four-minute round on Quick (about two minutes) settles your nerves, use it. We know of no evidence that a pre-test game raises scores, so don't play long enough to tire yourself.
Afterwards
What if it went badly?
Ask the employer about their retake policy; it varies by company. Whatever happens, the practice you did is the part that carries forward to the next test.
More questions job seekers ask
Can brain games raise my IQ or aptitude score?
There is no good evidence that they raise underlying ability. A major review found brain training improves the trained tasks, with less evidence for closely related tasks and very little for distantly related ones or everyday performance (Simons et al., 2016).
Is SkillArena a CCAT practice test?
No. SkillArena is a game with thirteen short games across focus, memory, reasoning, numbers, careful reading and clear wording. It has no CCAT-style questions and no spatial puzzles. For the test format itself, use the publisher's own practice tests.
What helps most before a pre-employment aptitude test?
Familiarity with the format. Across 107 samples, retaking a cognitive ability test raised scores by about a quarter of a standard deviation on average, and more with coaching in between (Hausknecht et al., 2007).
How many questions are on the CCAT?
Criteria says the CCAT has 50 questions and 15 minutes, covering verbal, math and logic, and spatial reasoning (Criteria, checked November 2026). That works out to 18 seconds a question.
Will brain games help with the spatial reasoning section?
Not SkillArena: none of its games are spatial. Use official practice items for shape, pattern and rotation questions.
Is SkillArena free?
Yes, the listing describes SkillArena as a free skill game with no account and no ads. All games work offline; optional Game Center leaderboards need a connection.
Should I play brain games the morning of the test?
Only if it calms you. We know of no study showing a warm-up game raises aptitude scores. If a four-minute round helps you feel switched on, fine; if it makes you anxious, skip it.
How to use SkillArena as a warm-up in 3 steps
- Pick Quick. Daily Arena has Quick (about 2 min), Standard (about 4) and Extended (about 8). Before practice, two minutes is plenty.
- Turn on Relaxed pace if timers rattle you. The listing describes a relaxed pace option with longer timers, so you can warm up without the clock in your face.
- Then open the real practice test. The game is the stretch; the practice test is the run.
A design decision we made: if you leave the app mid-round, the timer pauses until you come back. A recruiter's call shouldn't cost you a round.
Who SkillArena is not for
If your test is tomorrow, skip us and do one more official practice set. If your test is mostly spatial or mechanical reasoning, we don't cover it. If you want a dedicated aptitude-prep course with full mock exams, that is a different kind of product, and you should pick one built for your specific test.
SkillArena suits people who want four minutes a day of quick numbers, reading and rule-following as a habit, before and after the job hunt.
