What is an advent calendar brain challenge?
It is one small mental challenge a day from December 1 to 24, opened like an advent door, so the countdown builds a habit instead of a chocolate stash. Ours uses SkillArena, a free skill game for iPhone and iPad, and takes about four minutes a day.
Twenty-four doors. About four minutes each. Nothing to recycle on December 26.
Who this December challenge is for
Good fit: adults who already buy themselves an advent calendar, puzzle people who like a daily ritual, couples or housemates who want a small shared competition, and anyone who wants a December habit that fits on a bus ride.
Pick something else: if you want paper and a pencil, a page-a-day puzzle calendar is the better gift. If you want a hands-on object, physical brain-teaser advent calendars have a metal or wooden puzzle behind each door. If you want zero screens in December, skip the app entirely.
Advent calendar options compared
| Option | Per day | Cost | Missed a day? | After Dec 24 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Page-a-day puzzle calendar | One printed puzzle | Paid, one-off | Catch up on paper | Runs all year |
| Physical brain-teaser advent calendar | A small object puzzle | Paid, one-off | Doors wait for you | A box of 24 puzzles |
| This plan + SkillArena | 2 to 8 minutes of play | Free download | Nothing is lost | Daily Arena keeps going |
We make SkillArena. Physical calendars are a lovely gift; this plan is for people who want the daily ritual without another box.
The 24-door plan, December 1 to 24, 2026
Weekdays stay short. Weekends get the bigger modes: The Tower, Deep Focus and the district bosses.
- Dec 1 TueDaily Arena on Quick, about 2 minutes. Door one is just showing up.
- Dec 2 WedDaily Arena on Standard: four games, about 4 minutes.
- Dec 3 ThuDaily Duel: one seeded challenge, one attempt, the same for every player.
- Dec 4 FriPressure Round: a fast mixed sprint to end the work week.
- Dec 5 SatThe Tower: a new category every floor. Write down your floor.
- Dec 6 SunDeep Focus: 30 trials of go/no-go. Tap on go, hold on no-go.
- Dec 7 MonDaily Arena on Standard. Monday rule: no warm-up excuses.
- Dec 8 TueDaily Duel. Same questions as everyone else, so no excuses there either.
- Dec 9 WedDaily Arena, then open the Progress tab and read how your ratings are calculated.
- Dec 10 ThuPressure Round. Speed matters, so does the last wrong tap.
- Dec 11 FriDaily Arena on Standard, before the weekend gets busy.
- Dec 12 SatBoss weekend: take on a district boss and try for its relic.
- Dec 13 SunThe Tower again. Beat your December 5 floor?
- Dec 14 MonDaily Arena on Quick. Busy week, short door.
- Dec 15 TueDaily Duel. One shot, then put the phone down.
- Dec 16 WedDeep Focus again: compare it with December 6.
- Dec 17 ThuDaily Arena on Standard.
- Dec 18 FriPressure Round, the last sprint before the holiday week.
- Dec 19 SatDaily Arena on Extended, about 8 minutes. A longer door for a Saturday.
- Dec 20 SunBoss weekend: a second district boss.
- Dec 21 MonDaily Arena on Quick. Wrapping paper can wait two minutes.
- Dec 22 TueDaily Duel. Compare with a friend who plays the same day.
- Dec 23 WedThe Tower: your best floor of December?
- Dec 24 ThuDaily Arena on Standard, then look back at your weekly recap and your player class.
Mini story: a December on two phones
Picture two housemates who usually trade chocolate advent calendars. This year they try the plan instead. December 3 is a Daily Duel: same seeded challenge for both, one attempt each, results compared while the pasta boils. December 5 is The Tower; one stops at floor 9 and writes it on the fridge.
On the 13th the fridge number gets beaten. On the 16th, one of them misses the door entirely after a late shift, opens it the next morning, and nothing in the app is lost. By the 24th the ring is full, and Daily Arena is still there on the 26th for whoever wants a fifth door into the new year.
A full ring is 24 short wins, not one long grind.

Boss weekendsHonest limits
- SkillArena has no advent mode. The 24 doors are our plan; the tracker ring here saves only in your browser.
- Ratings from 1 to 100 describe performance in SkillArena's own games. The listing says plainly they are not an IQ score or a medical, psychological or clinical assessment.
- We make no promise that 24 days changes anything outside the game. The National Institute on Aging (reviewed 2024) notes there is not enough evidence that commercial brain-training apps match the effects seen in the ACTIVE trial.
- Optional Game Center leaderboards need a connection and show your Game Center name. Everything else works offline.
One design decision we made: if you leave the app mid-round, the timer pauses until you come back. December has a lot of doorbells.
Advent challenge questions
Is there a free advent calendar brain challenge for adults?
Yes. The 24-day plan on this page is free, and every door uses modes in SkillArena's free download: Daily Arena, Daily Duel, Deep Focus, The Tower, Pressure Round and the district bosses.
Does SkillArena have a built-in advent calendar?
No. This is our own December plan built on the app's existing daily modes. The tracker ring on this page saves only in your browser.
How long does each day take?
Most doors are 2 to 4 minutes. Daily Arena runs Quick (about 2 minutes), Standard (about 4) or Extended (about 8). December 19 is the one longer door.
What if I miss a day?
Open the door late. SkillArena's listing says nothing is lost if you miss a day, and the plan has no penalty either.
Is it suitable for a family advent tradition?
It works for adults and teens with their own iPhone. The Daily Duel is the same seeded challenge for every player on that date, so two people can compare results at dinner.
Will 24 days of brain games make me smarter?
We don't claim that. Ratings in SkillArena describe performance in its own games, and the National Institute on Aging notes there is not enough evidence that commercial brain-training apps match the effects of the ACTIVE trial.
Can I start after December 1?
Yes. Start on any door. The ring fills from whichever days you tick.
