What are good Thanksgiving brain teasers for adults?

The best ones take two minutes, have one answer you can check, and borrow something from the holiday: a grocery sum, a kitchen anagram, a pie-cutting puzzle or a seating chart. Below are seven, one per day from Friday, November 20 to Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2026. Each one leans on a different skill, the same six Cognilo rotates through: numbers, language, logic, spatial, memory and focus.

Then, if you like: today's Daily 5, about six minutes.

    Language

    Two kitchen anagrams

    Unscramble RYCRBERAN and TOPAOT.

  3. 3Sun
    Nov 22

    Logic

    The pie-count pattern

    Continue the pattern: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ?

    Show answer

    42. The gaps grow by two each time: +4, +6, +8, +10, +12.

Then, if you like: today's Daily 5, about six minutes.

  4. 4Mon
    Nov 23

    Spatial

    Three cuts

With three straight cuts across a round pie, and no stacking the slices, what is the most pieces you can make?

    Show answer

    7. Make sure every cut crosses both earlier cuts, and not where they meet.

Then, if you like: today's Daily 5, about six minutes.

  5. 5Tue
    Nov 24

    Memory

    Set the table backwards

Read once: fork, plate, knife, spoon, glass, napkin. Cover the list and say it in reverse.

    Show answer

Napkin, glass, spoon, knife, plate, fork. Picture walking along the place setting from right to left.

Then, if you like: today's Daily 5, about six minutes.

  6. 6Wed
    Nov 25

    Focus

    Count the Ts

How many letter Ts are in: THE TURKEY TROT STARTS AT TEN?

    Show answer

    8. The easy ones to miss are the two in STARTS.

Then, if you like: today's Daily 5, about six minutes.

  7. 7Thu
    Nov 26

    Logic

    The seating chart

Grandma, Uncle, Cousin and Aunt sit in a row. Cousin is on the left end. Grandma is not on an end. Uncle sits directly to the right of Aunt. Who sits where, left to right?

    Show answer

Cousin, Grandma, Aunt, Uncle. Cousin takes seat 1. Aunt and Uncle need two seats side by side; seats 2 and 3 would leave Grandma on the end, so they take 3 and 4, and Grandma sits in 2.

Then, if you like: today's Daily 5, about six minutes.

One teaser. One answer. Then go eat.

Honest limits

Thanksgiving teaser questions

What are good Thanksgiving brain teasers for adults?

Ones with a single checkable answer and a holiday twist: a grocery-change sum, an anagram like RYCRBERAN, a number sequence, a pie-cutting puzzle, a seating-logic puzzle. All seven on this page have answers you can reveal.

How long does the 7-day challenge take?

About two minutes for each teaser, plus Cognilo's Daily 5 if you want it, which takes about six minutes at a typical pace. Ten minutes a day, tops.

Can I do the teasers with family at the table?

Yes. Read one aloud between courses; the seating puzzle on day 7 works especially well with the real relatives present. Just don't use their real seats as the answer.

Do brain teasers keep your brain young?

We can't promise that and won't. The National Institute on Aging says there isn't enough evidence that commercial brain-training apps have the effects seen in research training programs (NIA, reviewed 2024). Play them because they're fun.

Is Cognilo free?

Yes. The free tier includes the Daily 5, all six skills, ratings, the Benchmark and achievements. Cognilo Pro is an optional monthly or annual subscription that adds Performance Lab modes, weekly and monthly reports and longer rating history.

Does Cognilo work offline, say at a relative's house?

Yes. Cognilo works offline and needs no account. Purchases, restores and optional Game Center leaderboards need a connection.

What a result looks like, in the app and here

After each Cognilo round you get a strategy tip for that game, a note on pace versus accuracy, and an unrated Review replay of anything that slipped, showing what you picked and what was right. We built the Pantry Run above the same way: it tells you which items you missed, not just a score.

A worked example, using day 7: write four seats. Cousin goes in seat 1. Aunt and Uncle need two seats side by side with Uncle on the right, so they fit in 2–3 or 3–4. If they took 2–3, Grandma would sit in seat 4, an end. So they take 3–4 and Grandma sits in 2. Placing the most constrained person first is the whole trick, and it's the kind of tip Cognilo's Rule Chain rounds hand you after a miss.

Three ways to do holiday brain teasers

A printed teaser sheet

Great at the table, shared by everyone. Runs out after one sitting and the answers are usually printed upside down underneath.

A trivia game

Loud and social. Rewards what you know, not how you think, and someone always argues about the answer card.

Cognilo's Daily 5

Five short puzzles at your level, about six minutes, untimed by default. Quiet and solo; no use as a party game.

How the challenge works in 3 steps

  1. Pick your time. Morning coffee or after dishes. Same time each day makes seven days easy.
  2. Do the day's teaser, then check. Two minutes, honest answer, no peeking.
  3. Optional: the Daily 5. Cognilo's five rounds rotate categories so all six come round across the week. Missed a day? Its Rhythm counts days per week, not an unbroken streak, so Thanksgiving chaos doesn't reset anything.

One design decision we made: no streak to lose. Holidays break streaks, and a broken streak is the most common reason people quit a habit they liked.

Who should pick something else: if you want a teaser to shout across a table of twelve, print this page instead of opening an app. If you want timed, competitive play every day, Cognilo's Sprint mode exists, but a dedicated speed game will suit you better.
