What is a New Year brain training challenge?
A New Year brain training challenge is a short daily set of skill games you commit to for the first week of January, sized so small that day seven feels as easy as day one. Ours uses SkillArena's Daily Arena: four different short games, about four minutes, a new mix every day.
Most January plans fail on size, not willpower. Thirty minutes of anything is a negotiation. Four minutes fits between the kettle and the coffee. So this page gives you a dated first-week plan, three steps to run it, and the honest limits of what a week of games can do.
Small enough to repeat beats big enough to impress.
Your first-week plan (pick a start date)
How the first week works in 3 steps
- Pick the slot, not the motivation. Attach the Daily Arena to something you already do every morning. Choose Quick, Standard or Extended once and leave it for the week.
- Play only today's Arena for three days. Ignore the other modes. Difficulty adapts to how you play, so early rounds settle at a level that is challenging without being frustrating.
- Add one extra mode from day four. Daily Duel, Deep Focus or The Tower, one at a time. On day seven, open the Progress tab and read your weekly recap.
If a round gets interrupted, leave the app: the timer pauses until you come back. If timers stress you out, switch on the relaxed pace option for longer timers. Both settings exist because a January morning is rarely quiet.
What each mode in the plan actually is
- Daily Arena
- Four varied games from focus, memory, reasoning, numbers, careful reading and clear wording. The backbone of every day.
- Daily Duel
- One seeded challenge per day, the same for every player. The app shows it as the same 12 questions worldwide, one attempt.
- Deep Focus
- A 30-trial go/no-go precision game: tap on go, hold on no-go.
- The Tower
- A new category every floor. The screenshot shows three lives and rising floors. How high can you climb?
- Pressure Round
- A fast mixed sprint, shown in the app as 25 rapid calls. Save it for week two.
Honest limits of a 7-day brain challenge
- A week of games makes you better at those games. The 2016 review by Simons and colleagues found little evidence that this kind of training carries over to everyday thinking.
- SkillArena's ratings describe your play in its own games. They are not an IQ score or a medical, psychological or clinical assessment.
- Seven days is a start, not a habit. The UCL study (2009) found it took 66 days on average for a behaviour to feel automatic.
- Game Center leaderboards are optional and need a connection. Everything else runs offline.
One design decision we made: missing a day costs nothing. No lost streak, no guilt screen. We would rather you come back on Thursday than quit on Wednesday because a number reset.
The best challenge is the one you are still doing on January 8.
Who should pick something else
If you want structured study for an exam, a dedicated course will serve you better. If you want long puzzles to sit with for an hour, a crossword or a logic puzzle book is more satisfying. SkillArena is built for short, fast rounds and a visible score, and it is a game first.
New Year challenge questions
How long should a New Year brain training challenge take each day?
Short enough that you will still do it on January 9. SkillArena's Daily Arena is about four minutes (Quick is about two, Extended about eight), which is why we built the plan on this page around it.
What if I miss a day in the first week?
Carry on the next day. In the UCL habit study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, missing a single opportunity did not significantly affect habit formation (UCL, 2009). SkillArena also keeps everything if you skip a day.
Will a week of brain games make me smarter?
Do not expect that. A 2016 review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest found training reliably improves the trained tasks, with little evidence for everyday benefits. SkillArena says its ratings are not an IQ score.
Is SkillArena free?
Yes. The App Store listing describes it as a free skill game, with no account and no ads, and as of November 2026 it lists no in-app purchases.
Can I do the challenge without internet?
Yes. All games work offline. Only the optional Game Center leaderboards need a connection, and they show your Game Center name.
Which mode should I try after the first week?
Try The Tower (a new category every floor) or the boss gates in the Worlds tab. The Progress tab's weekly recap will also show which category is lowest, which makes a good week-two target.
